So I just got back from taking Cypra to the vet and over the past few days she has been lazy and hasn't wanted to go out and do anything other than her walk. So the vet weighed her and she went from 54lbs to 69lbs in about a week! :( Does anyone have any suggestions on what else I could possibly do becides walking to get her to lose weight? She is only on 2 cups a day (1 in morning, 1 at night) of the Innova Evo reduced fat kibble and we have cut out treats completely. The vet said because of her recent weight gain, it's causing her anxiety and making her lick her hot spots more often than usual. The vet also said that we could maybe start teaching her more tricks to be interactive. Any suggestions on tricks I could teach her? She alread knows the basics: sit, lay down, stay, shake (in english and spanish), high five, and recently taught roll over. Anything would be great! THANKS!!

Wow, something just doesn't sound right here. I find it very hard to believe that Cypra gained 15 lbs. in one week for no reason. The vet didn't seem to think that there was something causing such a rapid weight gain? Is it fat or does she seem to be retaining fluid? Did he/she check Cypra very thoroughly? You know your dog much better than any of us do but I would flip out if one of mine gained 15 lbs. in one week. Why all of a sudden? I just don't really know what to tell you to try to help you out. Personally, I would go back to the vet and tell him/her that I find it hard to believe that all of a sudden my dog gained 15 lbs. in one week's time. I would ask them if there could possible be something medically that is causing this sudden weight gain. I'm all excited because my puppy gained 12 lbs. in 1 month! And he is eating about 4 cups a day!
I'm so sorry that I couldn't be of any help to you. It just doesn't make sense to me but I'm obviously not a vet. Please keep us updated! |

After I posted this, I felt like something was VERy out of place so I called the American vet and talked to her about some possibilities. (The first vet I took her too was the German vet off post). She said the following could be reasons:
1. raw dieting (she gets to eat a raw diet for dinner (kibble for breakfast), which she loves VERY much! She gets a chicken heart, 1/2 a liver, a chicken breast, and 1/2 an apple or 1/2 a small sweet potato). This may possibly be too much calorie intake for her metabolism and she can't burn it all off, so it turns into fat. 2. over-treating (I blame my husband for this while I am at work! He has a bad tendancy to give her treats every time she does something good). 3. water weight
Only other thing I can think of is that last week she had worms and was given treatment and preventative and went from having diahhrea 3-4 times a day, to normal poop once, maybe twice a day. But as you said, I'm not a vet...hard to diagnose! I had the German vet take her blood and she said she would call me back on Monday with the results. Hope nothing is wrong with her!:( She's my first dog ever and although I try not to pick favorites between her and Kai, we have that "first dog" special bond! I think I may cut out the raw diet and switch her back to 100% kibble.... |

i totally agree with bethlynn... this does not seem normal at all. how does your dogs stomach feel? i would look her over very well. as long as shes still going both 1 and 2 i wouldnt panic... cause at least then you know theres no blockage. im not vet and if the vet says its the food.. im sure they are prolly right.. but it seems like if your feeding her the same thing you always have... theres no reason for this much weight gain. and i know worms can cause bloating and slight weight gain but i dont think 15 lbs during the week of treatment is normal. im sorry to hear you pup is ill. im sure youll figure it out quick.
oh and one really cute trick is spin. my dogs love that one. playing fetch is a very ineractive trick. oh and army crawling.. or i just say crawl.. is really cute too. LOL. |
